We are often faced with the fact that road signs are known mostly by drivers but pedestrians don't understand these signs. Therefore, grade 10 students decided to hold a special lesson on road signs for 3rd grade students.

The ideas

Our grade 10 students have conducted kind of a survey among the school community (students, parents, teachers) and found that most of the pedestrians don’t understand road signs. Of course, everyone knows the signs "Pedestrian Crossing" and "Bus Stop", but with signs like "Resting Place", "Dangerous Bend", "Drinking Water" or "One-Way Street" they have difficulty. Road signs convey a lot of useful information that is needed not only for drivers but for all residents of the city. This kind of "Urban Alphabet" helps us to navigate the streets. Two of our 10 DP students decided to hold a lesson for an elementary school in order to familiarize children with road signs in a playful way.

The Initiatives

Grade 10 students conducted a one hour lesson for the 3rd grade, which contained different types of activities. At first, elementary school learners were introduced to verses with the major road signs, and then all together they watched and discussed a special video case. This part of the lesson was aimed at familiarization with the material. In the second part pupils consolidated their knowledge. They did crossword puzzles - the answers to which were road signs - then they constructed a puzzle and explained the picture on the sign. At the end of the session pupils invented and presented road signs of the future. They especially remembered the sign that floats in the air and limits the speed to 500 km/h. The shared photo illustrates all the ideas of the young; look to these pictures closely, because the future is not far off.
We hope that after this lesson, elementary school students will feel confident on the streets of Moscow, because they have mastered a kind of "Urban Alphabet".
